Florida Cashier Accused of Stealing Elderly Man’s $2,700 Winning Lottery Ticket

Florida Cashier Arrested

A Florida convenience store cashier has been arrested after authorities alleged she kept an elderly customer’s winning lottery ticket instead of returning it. Investigators say surveillance footage and evidence recovered during the investigation helped solve the case and led to criminal charges.

Elderly Customer’s Routine Lottery Visit Took an Unexpected Turn

According to investigators, the elderly man regularly plays the same lottery numbers and visited a Walmart gas station in Volusia County on June 15 to check several tickets. One of those tickets turned out to be worth $2,700.

Because Florida retailers are only authorized to redeem prizes up to a certain amount, the customer needed to claim his winnings elsewhere. Authorities say the cashier informed him that he would have to visit another location but allegedly failed to hand back the winning ticket.

Missing Ticket Prompted Investigation

After realizing that the ticket had not been returned, the customer went back to the store and reported the issue. Store management reviewed security footage to determine what had happened.

Investigators stated that the surveillance video allegedly showed the cashier placing the winning ticket into her vest pocket after assisting the customer. By the time authorities arrived, the employee had already left for the day.

Deputies Recover the Winning Ticket

Law enforcement officials contacted the cashier the following day while she was at work. During questioning, she reportedly explained that another customer had approached her register immediately after the elderly man left, causing her to temporarily place the ticket in her pocket.

Authorities said she claimed she never intended to deprive the customer of his winnings and could not explain why she still had the ticket.

Deputies later accompanied the woman to her vehicle, where the ticket was allegedly recovered. Store representatives confirmed that it was the same ticket belonging to the elderly winner.

Grand Theft Charge Filed

Following the investigation, the woman was arrested and booked into the Volusia County jail on a charge of grand theft.

The case highlights how surveillance systems and quick action by store management helped authorities recover the lottery ticket before the winnings were lost permanently.

Florida Lottery Prize Claim Rules

According to Florida Lottery regulations, retail locations can redeem prizes worth up to $599. Larger winnings, including prizes between $600 and $1 million, must be claimed through authorized district offices or other designated channels.

Because the elderly customer’s prize totaled $2,700, he would have needed to complete the claim through the appropriate Florida Lottery process.

Investigation Highlights Importance of Verifying Lottery Transactions

The incident serves as a reminder for lottery players to carefully verify that they receive all tickets back after having them checked. Officials also emphasize the value of surveillance footage and prompt reporting when disputes arise.

Authorities have not indicated whether additional charges will be filed as the case proceeds through the legal system.
