Samsung Surprises With Early Launch of Galaxy S25 Edge
Samsung has officially released the Galaxy S25 Edge, a sleek and ultra-thin smartphone, as part of its Galaxy S25 collection. The new model is just 5.8mm thick and weighs just 163 grams, making it the thinnest and lightest flagship phone.
The Galaxy S25 Edge has a 6.7-inch screen, the same as the Galaxy S25, but it’s been made thinner and lighter. It capabilities a twin-digicam device and is equipped with Samsung’s modern-day AI-powered features, aiming to deliver pinnacle performance in a thin shape.
Samsung has priced the device starting at $1,099, and it will officially go on sale on May 30, 2025.
Samsung Breaks Tradition to Stay Ahead in the Smartphone Race
What makes this launch unusual is the timing. Samsung typically reveals major phones in January and foldable devices around mid-year. However, the Galaxy S25 Edge has arrived just four months after the S25 series launch, which is a bold and strategic move.
This accelerated release reflects Samsung’s effort to stay ahead of competitors and keep its mobile sales strong, especially with growing pressure from Chinese smartphone makers such as Xiaomi and Honor. It also helps Samsung keep the momentum from the successful release of the authentic S25 fashions, which caused strong sales and income in early 2025.
Market Conditions and Tariff Worries Influence Samsung’s Strategy
The global smartphone market is currently facing several challenges. According to Daniel Araujo, Vice President of Samsung’s Mobile Division, overall demand for smartphones may decrease in the coming months due to seasonal trends and uncertain global trade policies.
In April 2025, the U.S. introduced “reciprocal tariffs” under President Donald Trump, which affected multiple imported products. However, smartphones and chips have been quickly exempted, and a recent settlement between the U.S. and China has helped reduce tariff pressures for now.
Araujo stated that launching the Galaxy S25 Edge now could help support continued strong sales for Samsung’s flagship lineup despite the unpredictable market conditions.
Apple Expected to Follow With iPhone 17 Air
Samsung may also be taking early action before Apple announces its next big launch. Reports from Bloomberg suggest Apple is working on a thinner version of the iPhone, expected to be called the iPhone 17 Air, likely launching in September 2025.
Tech experts believe Samsung is trying to beat Apple to the punch by being the first to introduce a premium, slim smartphone. According to Ben Wood, Chief Analyst at CCS Insight, “Thin is definitely in for the second half of 2025.” He also said that Apple and Chinese competitors are expected to enter the thin phone market soon.
With the Galaxy S25 Edge, Samsung is setting the pace in the thin smartphone trend while preparing for rising competition and global market changes. The new launch not only strengthens its Galaxy S25 series but also positions Samsung as a leader in innovative design and AI features for 2025.
